Over 17 million Nigerians live abroad—in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe, and across Africa.

They are doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, academics, and artists. They send remittances home—over $20 billion annually—more than Nigeria receives in foreign aid or oil revenue combined.

But the diaspora’s role is not just money. It is knowledge, skills, and a different way of seeing.

📌 THE CHALLENGES

Challenge Description

1. Brain Drain: Nigeria’s brightest talent leaves. They have to. The country does not offer enough opportunities, security, or hope.

2. Disconnection: Many Nigerians abroad lose touch with the country. They become citizens of their new homes, not their old one.

3. Lack of Trust: The diaspora does not trust Nigerian governments. Why invest in a country that steals its own wealth?

4. Logistics: Remittances are expensive. Sending money home costs Nigerians billions in fees.

5. Legal Barriers: Dual citizenship was only fully recognised in 2018. Until then, Nigerians abroad were legally barred from participating in Nigeria’s politics.

📌 WHAT THE DIASPORA CAN DO

Action How It Helps

Investment Invest in Nigerian businesses, startups, and infrastructure. Create jobs and build the economy.

Remittances Continue sending money home—but also advocate for cheaper, easier transfer systems.

Knowledge Transfer Share skills, expertise, and networks. Train Nigerian professionals.

Advocacy: Hold Nigerian governments accountable. Lobby for policy reforms, transparency, and democracy.

Cultural Exchange Share Nigerian culture with the world—and bring the world’s best practices home.

Return Return to Nigeria—permanently or temporarily—to build, teach, and lead.

Political Participation Vote (where possible), support diaspora candidates, and advocate for diaspora representation in government.

📌 WHAT NIGERIA CAN DO

Action How It Helps

Diaspora Engagement Policy: Create a formal framework for engaging the diaspora—not just as remittance senders, but as partners.

Reduced Transfer Costs: Make it cheaper and easier for Nigerians abroad to send money home.

Dual Citizenship: Fully recognise and protect dual citizenship. Allow Nigerians abroad to vote in national elections.

Opportunities: Create jobs, business incentives, and platforms for returning Nigerians.

Security: Guarantee the safety and security of returning Nigerians and their investments.

📌 THE VERDICT

The Nigerian diaspora is not a loss. It is an asset.

Nigerians abroad are not abandoning Nigeria. They are building capacity—for themselves, for their families, and for the country. When they return—in person or through investment—they bring skills, resources, and a different way of seeing.

Nigeria does not have to choose between its diaspora and its people at home. It can have both.

💬 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Circle,

Week 16 is up. The Nigerian Diaspora – Can the Abroad Build at Home?

A few questions I’ve been sitting with:

1. What should Nigeria do to make the diaspora feel more connected to home?

2. Is returning to Nigeria a realistic option for you—or for others you know?

3.
